Keep on keepin’ on
As I write this, on the eve of Election Day, I, like probably most of you, sit with bated breath, a hard ball of tension lodged in my chest, awaiting results and the consequences of those results. But then, the tea kettle whistles and I am reminded to go tend to my morning's coffee, to get dressed, and to continue on with my day. And that's how it goes. Always.
We can and will always worry about the future. It's sort of what we humans do best. Spoiler alert: Whether it's an election, a pandemic, global warming, (and the list goes on) there truly is always something looming about in the uncertain future. Sorry to say, but yes, at some point in the future, tragedy will happen. It is inevitable in the span of a life. Yet, also, at some point in the future, majesty will happen. It is inevitable in the span of a life.
We just never know. We might like to think we know. But if 2020 has taught us anything, it is that we just never know what will happen. So knowing that we don't know, what do we do?
We do what we do. We do what we humans have been doing every day since we crawled out of the sea. We wake up. We get up. We make our coffee (What? You mean early humans didn't have coffee??? And we survived??) We hunt/ harvest/ go to the deli for our lunch. We do our work. We shares our stories of the day. And we go on.
Whatever happens, or doesn't happen, this week; whether you're psyched or crushed, you will go on. Human beings have been through far, far worse in their lives and yet here we are. And we're here because humans kept going. They kept getting up every day and showing up to the world in whatever way they needed to. And you will too.
Whatever happens, or doesn't happen, do what you do. Keep going. Cry, scream, celebrate, but keep going. The next humans need us to.
